Intensive Two Day Sydney Workshop
A Skill-Building Workshop - A Once in a Lifetime Experience
The study of the science and art of clinical hypnosis begins with the
recognition that influence is inherent in the therapy process. Far more
complex, though, are the deeper questions related to how one person can
instill a belief in someone else that his or her distressing symptoms
can diminish, resulting in a recovery, or how someone can suggest to
another that he or she evolve a frame of mind that makes success
possible in some desired domain.
Hypnosis is often an astonishing phenomenon: How can someone absorb and
integrate a suggestion for an altered perceptual framework for the
meaning of an experience, encouraging a greater cognitive and
perceptual flexibility that helps make relief from psychological
distress possible?
This two day course provides many insights into the dynamics of
integrating patterns and principles of hypnosis with the core skills of
effective psychotherapy. Specifically, we will focus on identifying and
developing some of the key skills necessary to design and deliver
meaningful psychotherapeutic interventions hypnotically. Following a
didactic presentation to establish core principles of the hypnotic
framework, participants will observe a live, unrehearsed clinical
demonstration.
This will provide them the opportunity to observe the process of
interviewing for key patterns that regulate a client’s symptoms, then
organizing and providing a structured hypnosis session designed to
alleviate those symptoms. Then, each participant will have the
opportunity to practice interviewing, then designing and delivering a
goal oriented hypnosis session in a small group context. This is not
only a training in the dynamics of applying hypnosis skillfully, it is
also a training in learning to think and intervene strategically.
Workshop Learning Objectives
Attend this workshop and you will learn to:
• Recognize and more skillfully use the suggestive elements inherent in any type of therapy
• Use hypnosis to increase client responsiveness and enhance treatment efficacy
• Use goal-oriented therapeutic metaphors in diagnosis and treatment
• Develop therapeutic sequences for the unfolding of the therapy process
• Integrate hypnosis with other empirically supported psychotherapeutic approaches
Course Topics:
The course emphasis is on the clinical application of hypnosis in
strategic problem resolution. Common themes of therapy will be
considered, and strategies for addressing common disorders will be
presented. The workshop will be structured flexibly to allow for
practice sessions, discussion, and question-and-answer sessions. Thus,
topics beyond those mentioned below will also be covered.
• Identifying how (not why) the client generates symptoms
• Assessing client patterns of internal organization
• Strategy planning for solution-oriented interventions
• Designing and delivering hypnotic interventions in therapy
• Fostering client independence
• Exercises in performing hypnotic strategies
• Hypnosis as a symptom-specific strategy of active intervention
• Hypnosis as a vehicle of empowerment and skill-building
• Constructing therapeutic metaphors
